野原や道端などに自生する一年草。教会や幼稚園のいろんなところで咲いています
ツユクサ科ツユクサ属に属し被子植物（被子植物）の単子葉類に分類されます。花は早朝から咲き、午後にはしぼんでしまう、朝の間のみ咲く短命花（この写真は深谷先生が朝に撮ってくれました）で、その特性が朝露を連想させるため、「露草（ツユクサ）」と名付けられました
その花の形や色から「帽子花（ぼうしばな）」、「青花（あおばな）」ともよばれ、また花の汁は青く、花弁に触れるとすぐに色素がつくことから染料としても使われています。古くは「着草（つきくさ）」、カラアイ（唐藍）、エノグバナ（絵具花）、アイクサ（藍草）とも呼ばれていました。
日本の代表的な染色工芸の一つである友禅ゆうぜん染めの下絵を描く際に、露草（つゆくさ）の花びらの汁から抽出された青い 染料が使われていました。この染料は、青花あおばなと呼ばれ、染色の際の下絵（したえ）を描く材料に古くから使用されていました。
青花（あおばな）がなぜ下絵用なのかは、水洗いすることで簡単に色が流れてしまう性質があるためです。古くは露草（つゆくさ）の花の汁を和 紙にしみ込ませて「青花紙あおばながみ（つゆ草紙）」を作り、使用する際にその紙を水に入れて青花の液を作り、下絵描きに使用するという形で青色を保存する工夫もされていました。
このツユクサですが、その可愛らしい見た目とは裏腹にどこにでも生える上に強い繁殖力を持ち、ほかの植物をおおいかぶさりほかの植物を駆逐し、さらに増えていきます、花を咲かせた後にタネができ、そのタネで子孫を増やしていくのですが、その種は受精率１００％で確実に種になり、さらに地下、根の近くにも種を付けます、どういう事かと言いますと、地中に閉鎖花と言われる花をつけ、そこにもタネを作ることができます。
夏の強害雑草といわれるほど！近くに大切な草花や育てている作物がある場合は、ツユクサは根こそぎ取り除いたほうがよいとの事です。
ですが、悪いことばかりではありません。
ツユクサは野菜としておいしく食べることもできます。おひたしや炒め物にしたり、新芽はサラダにも。また鮮やかな色合いの花も食べることができるので、サラダや、デザートなどにそえるとおしゃれな一皿になりますよ！
ツユクサの花言葉は「尊敬」「恋の心変わり」「なつかしい関係」などです。

Dayflower (Tsuyukusa)
An annual wildflower that grows naturally in fields and along roadsides. You can find it blooming in many places like churches and kindergartens.
It belongs to the Commelinaceae family, genus Commelina, and is classified as a monocotyledonous angiosperm. The flower blooms in the early morning and wilts by afternoon, making it a short-lived flower that only blooms in the morning (this photo was taken by Pastor. Fukaya in the morning). Because of this trait, which evokes the image of morning dew, it was named "Tsuyukusa" (which literally means "dew grass").
Due to its shape and color, it's also known by names such as "Hat Flower" (Bōshibana) and "Blue Flower" (Aobana). The blue juice from the petals stains easily when touched, so it has been used as a natural dye. In ancient times, it was also called Tsukikusa ("Clinging Grass"), Kara-ai ("Chinese Indigo"), Enogubana ("Paint Flower"), and Aikusa ("Indigo Grass").
In one of Japan's representative dyeing crafts, Yuzen dyeing, the blue dye extracted from the petals of the dayflower was used to sketch preliminary designs. This dye, known as Aobana, was particularly suited for underdrawing because it washes away easily with water. In the past, people preserved this blue dye by soaking the flower juice into traditional Japanese paper to make what was called Aobanagami ("Blue Flower Paper"). When needed, they would soak the paper in water to extract the blue liquid for drawing the underdesigns.
Now, despite its charming appearance, the Tsuyukusa is quite the survivor—it grows just about anywhere, has a strong reproductive ability, can overgrow other plants, and even drive them out. After blooming, it produces seeds, and its seed production rate is 100% due to guaranteed pollination. What’s more, it also produces seeds underground, near its roots, through something called cleistogamous flowers—flowers that never open and still produce seeds underground.
It’s even considered a harmful summer weed, so if you have precious plants or crops nearby, it's best to remove Tsuyukusa completely by the roots.
But it’s not all bad news!
Tsuyukusa is edible and can be enjoyed as a vegetable. You can blanch or stir-fry it, and its young shoots make a nice addition to salads. The bright blue flowers are also edible and can be used to garnish salads or desserts—turning any dish into something elegant!
Its flower language includes meanings such as "Respect," "Inconstant Love," and "Nostalgic Connection."
This past Sunday, we had our Church School Summer Program, and many elementary school children gathered and spent a fun-filled day at church!
During craft time, we made original bookmarks and keychains,
and for dinner, everyone enjoyed curry together.
After that, we held an evening worship service surrounded by candlelight.
Summer vacation has just begun!
