 その枝幼稚園の園庭に甘い香りが漂っています。この香りは

バナナシュラブ…和名は唐種招霊（カラタネオガタマ）、唐招霊（トウオガタマ）

中国南部原産（Michelia figo）モクレン科 オガタマノキ属

バナナのような甘い強い芳香をもっているのが特徴です。花の寿命は短く1～2日で散りますが、次から次へ開花するので、10日前後は楽しめるとのことでした。

日本へ渡来したのは江戸時代中期～明治初期で、暖地の庭園や神社に植栽されているのをよく見かけます。その理由は和名にあります「オガタマ」は霊を招くと言う意味の「おきたま(招霊)」が訛ったもので、これはオガタマノキの枝葉が神事に用いられたからと言われ、オガタマの実の形が、神楽鈴の形の由来にもなっているそうです。

しかしながら「唐種（カラタネ）」と名乗るのは、本種が渡来する以前から日本の暖地に自生するオガタマノキと区別しているので、別物だという事でした。

　バナナシュラブは木に咲く花として芳香があり、オガタマノキほど大きくならず管理しやすいこと、枝葉が密で花付きも良いことなどから一般家庭でも植栽されるようになり、いまや 庭木としての人気があります。

乙枝先生の著書「花こよみ」には

「10センチ余りの小さい挿木苗の「おがたま」を栃木の友が送ってくださったのは1971年。いつの日か、香しい花が咲いてくれるだろうと大事に大事に育てた」と記してありました。

その苗🌱は今やジャングルジムよりも大きく育ち、その花の香りは園庭いっぱいに広がり、子どもたちが走り回るそのところも優しい香りが包んでいます～

A sweet fragrance fills the garden of Sonoeda Kindergarten.
Its source is the Banana Shrub—known in Japanese as Karatane-Ogatama or Tō-Ogatama.

This plant, native to southern China (Michelia figo), belongs to the magnolia family.
Its most distinctive feature is the strong, sweet scent that resembles ripe bananas.
Although each flower lasts only a day or two, the tree continues to bloom one after another, allowing us to enjoy its fragrance for around ten days.

The Banana Shrub was introduced to Japan between the mid-Edo period and the early Meiji era.
It is often seen in shrine grounds and gardens in warmer regions.
Its Japanese name, Ogatama, comes from okitama, meaning "to invite the spirit."
The tree’s branches and leaves were used in Shinto rituals, and its fruit is said to have inspired the shape of kagura suzu, the sacred bells used in ceremonial dance.

The prefix karatane (“from Tang China”) is used to distinguish this variety from the native Ogatama-no-ki, which has long grown in Japan’s warmer areas—meaning the Banana Shrub is a distinct species.

With its sweet-smelling blossoms, moderate size, and dense foliage, the Banana Shrub has become increasingly popular in home gardens. It is easier to manage than the native Ogatama-no-ki and flowers abundantly, making it a favorite as an ornamental tree.

The Banana Shrub at Sonoeda Kindergarten is now in full bloom, its flowers covering the tree.

In Hana Koyomi ("A Floral Calendar"), Otoe-sensei wrote:

“In 1971, a friend from Tochigi sent me a small cutting of an ‘Ogatama’ tree, just over 10 centimeters tall.
I cared for it with great love, hoping that one day it would bless us with fragrant blossoms.”

That baby tree🌱 has now grown taller than the jungle gym.
Its sweet scent fills the garden, gently wrapping the space where the children run and play.
