「平戸つつじ」

長崎県の平戸市を原産とするツツジの品種群の総称。

ツツジ科／ツツジ属、   常緑広葉／低木

ツツジの中でも、大型の一重咲きで、葉は長さが約4～11cm、花は大きなものだと、直径約10cmになります。開花は４～５月。花色は紫、白、ピンク、紅色など多彩です。

漢字で書くと平戸躑躅（ひらどつつじ）。大きくて綺麗な花を数多く咲かせること、丈夫な性質を持つことから各地の庭園、公園、街路などに好まれ、植栽されています。

　花言葉は「節度」や「慎み」ですが花色によって異なります。赤色は「恋の喜び」、「愛の喜び」紫は「美しい人」、白は「初恋」を意味するとのことでした。

　このツツジの剪定に適した時期は5～6月頃です。

ツツジは4～5月頃に花を咲かせ、咲き終わってすぐに翌年咲く花芽を付けはじめます。この新しい花芽を切り落とさないために、開花が終わった直後の6～7月頃に剪定するのがベストだそうです。
 

京都市でつつじの花の名所といえば。。

毎年GWのあたりに蹴上浄水場の一般公開があります。今年は4月25日（金）～27日（日）だったそうですが、普段は公開されないところ、この時だけの特別公開です。

約4,900本のつつじの花を一般公開されるのは圧巻ですし、デジタルスタンプラリーや施設見学ツアー（人数限定）、琵琶湖疏水のPRなど、普段入ることができない施設で、楽しみながら学べるイベントもあるそうです。

さて、次の日曜日は母の日礼拝です。母の日の由来、カーネーションを贈るようになった事、カーネーションに込められた母への愛や感謝の思いなどいろんなお話を聞くことができます。

人がこの世に誕生するのに母はなくしてはありえない。そう神が定めたことがアダムとイヴのエピソード、創世記の初めの方に記してあります。目を通してみると

神は女に向かって言われた「お前のはらみの苦しみを大きなものにする。お前は苦しんで子を産む…」創世記３：１６

でもこの母の日は感謝やたくさんの愛を表す言葉や物事が母に送られています。

神から与えられた苦しみも、いずれはたくさんの愛に変えられるという事なのではないかな？そう思わずにはいられません。

"Hirado Azalea"

A collective term for azalea varieties originating from Hirado City in Nagasaki Prefecture.

It belongs to the Ericaceae family, genus Rhododendron; it is a broadleaf evergreen and a low-growing shrub.

Among azaleas, the Hirado azalea is known for its large single blooms. The leaves are about 4 to 11 cm long, and the flowers can be as large as 10 cm in diameter. They bloom around April to May. The flowers come in a variety of colors, including purple, white, pink, and crimson.

In kanji, it is written as 平戸躑躅 (Hirado Tsutsuji). Due to its large, beautiful blossoms and hardy nature, it is widely planted in gardens, parks, and along streets across the country.

Its flower language includes meanings like "moderation" and "humility," though these differ depending on the color. Red represents “joy of love” or “delight in romance,” purple means “beautiful person,” and white stands for “first love.”

The best time to prune this azalea is around May to June.

Since azaleas bloom from April to May and start forming buds for the next year right after flowering, the ideal time for pruning is immediately after blooming, around June to July, to avoid cutting off the new buds.

One of the best places to see azaleas in bloom is the Keage Water Purification Plant, which opens to the public annually around Golden Week. This year, it was open from Friday, April 25th to Sunday, April 27th. Normally closed to the public, the site offers a special limited-time opening.

Around 4,900 azalea bushes are there—an awe-inspiring sight. Visitors can also enjoy events like a digital stamp rally, limited-entry facility tours, and PR exhibits about the Lake Biwa Canal. It's a rare chance to learn while exploring a normally inaccessible facility.

This coming Sunday is Mother’s Day worship.

We’ll hear stories about the origins of Mother’s Day, the tradition of giving carnations, and the love and gratitude symbolized by the flower.

Human life is impossible without a mother. This is something ordained by God, as described in the story of Adam and Eve in the early chapters of Genesis. If you read it, you’ll find:

To the woman He said, “I will greatly increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you shall bring forth children...” — Genesis 3:16

Scary! 😱

But on Mother’s Day, mothers are showered with words and gestures of deep appreciation and love.

Perhaps this pain given by God is ultimately transformed into an abundance of love. It's hard not to believe that’s true.
