皇帝ダリアが空へ向かって咲いています
晩秋の澄んだ空の下柿の木の間から、今年も皇帝ダリアが背をギューンと伸ばして咲きました。
淡いピンクの花びらが光を受けて透けるその花姿は、なんとも美しいのですが…
今年は高い！とっても遠いのです。見上げないと咲いているのは気づきません
皇帝ダリアはキク科ダリア属の多年草で、草丈は3〜5メートル。
この花が咲くのは、ちょうど季節が冬へ向かう頃。
暗くなる時間が早くなり、冷たい風が吹きはじめるこの時季に、高い場所でふわりと花を広げるその姿は、
“光のほうへ伸びていく”ということの意味を思わされます。
短い期間ではありますが、今年も美しい花を咲かせてくれています。
茎は太く見えますが中は空洞で、竹のような軽い構造をしています。そのため、強風が吹くと折れやすく、支柱で支えることが欠かせません。
原産はメキシコの高地。夏の高温多湿は苦手ですが、秋が深まると一気に花芽をつけ、日が短くなる晩秋〜初冬に咲く「短日植物」だそうです。
寒さにはとても弱く、霜が降りた朝には一晩でしおれてしまうほど。それでも、冷差が強くなる日々の中、柿木に守られるように支柱もなしに凛と伸び行く花の姿、すごいな～と感心します。
皇帝ダリアを見上げ、ふと教会学校での学び“信仰”について心に浮かぶことがありました。
中高成人科では使徒言行録の「パウロのローマへの旅」、最後の部分を皆で読み
信仰とは、「ただ信じる」だけのことではないのだ、と。それぞれの思いを話し合いました。
盲目的に信じ込むのではなく、
“主を信頼しているからこそ、信じることができる”
そのような関係があるのが私たちの信仰なのだとおしえてくれます。
それぞれの歩みも、時には風に揺れたり、不安定に見えることがあります。
皇帝ダリアの茎が空洞で折れやすいように、私たちも皆いろんな弱さを抱えています。
けれど、その根元やまわりにしっかりした支えがあれば、高く伸びていけるように、
主に信頼する心があるとき、私たちは思いがけないところまで導かれていくのだと思わずにはいられません。
信頼するからこそ、任せることができる。
信頼しているから、見えない先へも歩み出せる。
そんな信仰のあり方を、パウロの旅からもまた教会のギューンと伸びた「皇帝ダリア」からも人知れず教えてくれているようです。
ぜひ空を見上げてこの花を探してみてください。
皇帝ダリアの向こうにも、それぞれの歩みの向こうにも、主が備えてくださっているやさしい光を感じられますように。
Under the clear late-autumn sky, our Emperor Dahlia has once again stretched itself—way up—between the branches of the persimmon trees.
Its soft pink petals glow when the sunlight filters through them, creating a delicate, almost transparent beauty.
But this year, it is tall—astonishingly tall!
Unless you look straight up, you might not even realize it’s blooming.
The Emperor Dahlia is a perennial in the Aster family and can grow three to five meters high.
It blooms just as the season begins to turn toward winter.
As the days grow shorter and the cold wind begins to blow, this flower quietly opens its blooms high above us, reminding us what it means to reach toward the light.
Though its flowering season is brief, it is blooming beautifully again this year.
Its stem looks strong, yet inside it is hollow—light and bamboo-like.
Because of this, it can easily snap in strong winds and usually needs support.
Native to the highlands of Mexico, the plant dislikes our hot, humid summers, but once autumn deepens, it quickly sets buds and blooms in the short days of late fall and early winter.
It is also quite vulnerable to the cold; a single frosty morning can cause it to wilt in just one night.
And yet, protected by the persimmon tree and without any stake to support it, it still stands tall and upright.
I can’t help but admire its quiet strength.
As I looked up at the Emperor Dahlia, something from our Church School discussions on faith came to mind.
In the youth and adult class, we recently read the final part of Paul’s journey to Rome in the Acts .
We talked about how faith is not simply “believing” for its own sake.
Rather, it is something deeper.
Not a blind acceptance,
but a faith that grows from trust—
a faith that believes because it trusts the One who leads us.
Our own journeys can be unsteady at times.
Like the hollow stem of the Emperor Dahlia, we all carry our own weaknesses.
But just as the plant can stand tall when its base and surroundings support it,
so we, too, can grow upward when our hearts are rooted in trust in the Lord.
With that trust, we often find ourselves led to places we never expected.
We can entrust ourselves because we trust Him.
We can step forward even when we cannot see what lies ahead.
Both Paul’s courageous journey and our very tall Emperor Dahlia quietly whisper this truth to us:
faith grows where trust is present.
If you have a chance, look up and try to find the blossoms above the trees.
And may we sense the gentle light the Lord has prepared for us—
beyond the Emperor Dahlia, and also along each of our own journeys.
