幼稚園の北側フェンス添いに、ホーリー（セイヨウヒイラギ）の木があります。
そっとのぞいてみると、“とげのある葉”と“とげのない丸い葉”が同じ木の中にあるのがわかります。
ホーリーはモチノキ科の常緑樹で、高さは2〜10メートルほどに生長します。
葉は厚みがあり光沢があり、若い枝や下のほうの葉には鋭いとげがありますが、成長して高い位置についた葉はとげが少なく、丸みを帯びていくという不思議な特徴があります。冬にも緑を保ち、雌株には冬に赤い実をつけることから、古くから欧米ではクリスマスの象徴として親しまれてきました。

ホーリーの花言葉には、「先見の明」「将来の見通し」「永遠の命」「神を思う」などがあります。
寒さの中でも変わらない緑や、赤い実の確かな存在が、昔の人々に“希望”や“守り”を思い起こさせたのでしょう。
とがった部分を持つ葉も、変化の途中にある葉も、穏やかな形に落ち着いた葉も、今は全部混在していたとしても後々、葉はほぼ穏やかな形になっていくのではないでしょうか、それはどれも同じ一本の木の大切な歩みなのでしょう。。なんだか人の心の成長の現れのようですね😉
この日曜日、教会はアドベント第一礼拝を迎え、礼拝堂の中ではろうそくが１本灯されました。
教会暦ではこの日が一年の始まりの日となります。
この日から、クリスマスに向けて心を整え、主が来てくださることを静かに待ち望み、主が私たちのために生まれて来てくださった事実を思いめぐらす季節が始まります。
そして礼拝の後には、皆でクリスマスの飾りつけを行いました。
センペルセコイヤの大きな木にも、そしてオリーブや棗（なつめ）の木にも、ここにも！そこらへんにも！などワイワイにぎやかに飾りをつけながら、楽しい温かな時となりました。
教会の通りに面したよく見える場所に灯された飾りが、クリスマスを待つ喜びのしるし、として道行く人にも伝わればと願います。
またホーリーの木のそばを通られる時、どうぞ葉の形の違いを見つけてみてください
クリスマスへと向かうこの季節、このアドベントの歩みに、主の平安と希望が豊かにありますように。
Along the north-side fence of the kindergarten stands a holly tree.
If you take a closer look, you will notice that “spiny leaves” and “round, smooth leaves” grow together on the very same tree.
Holly is an evergreen tree in the Ilex family and can grow up to 2–10 meters tall.
Its leaves are thick and glossy. Younger branches and lower leaves develop sharp spines for protection, while leaves higher up on the tree become smoother and rounder as the tree matures. Because it keeps its green color through winter and female trees bear bright red berries, holly has long been cherished in Europe as a symbol of Christmas.

Holly’s traditional “flower language” includes meanings such as *foresight*, *clear vision for the future*, *eternal life*, and *turning one’s thoughts toward God*.
Its unchanging green in the cold and the faithful red berries must have reminded people long ago of “hope” and “protection.”
The spiny leaves, the ones still in transition, and the gentle rounded leaves—though they may all be mixed together now—will eventually become mostly the softer form as the tree continues to grow. Each stage is part of the life of this one tree. It feels a bit like watching the growth of a human heart, doesn’t it? 😉
This Sunday, our church celebrated the First Sunday of Advent, and one candle was lit in the sanctuary.
According to the church calendar, this day marks the beginning of a new year.
From this day, we begin a season of preparing our hearts for Christmas—quietly waiting for the coming of the Lord, and reflecting on the wondrous truth that Christ was born for us.
After the service, we gathered to decorate for Christmas together.
We joyfully placed ornaments on the tall dawn redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), as well as on the olive and jujube trees—“Here too! And over there as well!” It was a warm and cheerful time filled with laughter.
The decorations displayed along the street, where many can see them, shine as small signs of the joy of waiting for Christmas. We hope that this joy will also be shared with those who pass by.
And when you walk near the holly tree, please take a moment to notice the different shapes of its leaves.
As we journey through this Advent season toward Christmas, may the Lord’s peace and hope be abundant in your hearts.
