2025 12 14 薩摩杉（サツマスギ）

 

　幼稚園の北側、フェンス沿いに立つ薩摩杉（サツマスギ）は、季節が巡るたびに、私たちの歩みを見守ってくれています。

薩摩杉はスギの園芸品種のひとつで、葉が細かく、手で触れるとふわふわと柔らかいのが特徴です。一般的な杉に比べて葉先がやさしく、冬の冷たい空気の中でも青々とした緑を保ち続けます。

そのやわらかな枝葉は、クリスマスリースやスワッグの素材としてとても適しており、毎年、手入れの際に剪定した枝葉の一部は、新しい役割を与えられ、教会の玄関を飾るリースに！また、それぞれの家庭の玄関へ行ったり。同じ薩摩杉からの枝葉は、場所ごとに違った表情を見せています。

薩摩杉そのものに限定した花言葉は多くありませんが、杉全体に伝えられてきた花言葉には、「雄大」「永遠」「希望」「誠実」といった意味があります。冬の寒さの中でも緑を失わず、毎年変わらず枝を伸ばす姿は、変わることのない神さまの愛と、静かに続いていく恵みを思い起こさせてくれるとのことです。

　切り落とされた枝であっても、形を変え、人の手を通して、目立たないようでいてもなくてはならない存在として再び光を放ちだします——その姿は、私たち一人ひとりが主によって用いられるという希望に重なりませんか？

The Satsuma cedar standing along the fence on the north side of the kindergarten quietly watches over our daily lives as the seasons change.

The Satsuma cedar is a cultivated variety of Japanese cedar. Its fine leaves are soft and fluffy to the touch, with gentler tips than those of ordinary cedar trees. Even in the cold winter air, it keeps its fresh green color throughout the season.

Its soft branches and leaves are ideal materials for Christmas wreaths and swags. Each year, some of the branches trimmed during regular care are given a new purpose—decorating the entrance of the church, or finding their way to the front doors of individual homes. Branches from the same Satsuma cedar take on different expressions, depending on where they are placed.

While there are few flower meanings specific to the Satsuma cedar itself, the cedar tree in general is associated with meanings such as “grandeur,” “eternity,” “hope,” and “faithfulness.” Remaining green through the winter and growing steadily year after year, the cedar reminds us of God’s unchanging love and His quiet, continuing grace.

Even branches that have been cut down are transformed, passing through human hands to shine once again—as humble yet indispensable presences. Does this not reflect the hope that each one of us, too, is used by the Lord?
