幼稚園園庭の『ヘーゼルナッツ』の花が咲き始めています。

ヘーゼルナッツはカバノキ科ハシバミ属の落葉低木で、ヨーロッパから西アジアを原産とします。春先、葉が出る前に淡い黄色の雄花（尾状花序）を垂らす姿が特徴的です。派手さは全くありませんが、よく見るととても繊細です。ナッツ系といってよいのでしょうか？花咲く時期は異なりますが、栗の花とよく似ていますが栗の花のような強い匂いは感じません。

ヘーゼルナッツは菓子やパン、チョコレートなどに使われ、栄養価も高く、良質な脂質やビタミンEを多く含むことで知られています。

この幼稚園のヘーゼルナッツは、植えるときに植穴掘りに冬の間２か月もかかるほど手がかかったそうです。石を除き、砂利をふるい分け堆肥を仕込む労作は並大抵ではなかったと乙枝先生が「花こよみ」に記してられました。さらに植えてから実を安定して収穫できるまでに数年を要します。芽が出ても、すぐに大きな成果が見えるわけではありません。

そして土の中では根が張られ、枝は少しずつ力を蓄えています。そして３年をこえた頃から秋には硬い殻に包まれた実（ヘーゼルナッツ）をつけだすとのことでした。この小さな実の中にも、時間をかけて蓄えられた豊かな栄養が詰まっているのです。

この姿は、20歳という節目を迎える若者たちの歩みにも重なりませんか。成人という言葉からは「完成」や「一人前」という響きを受け取りがちですが、実際には、これからさらに深く根を張り、自分の実を結んでいく旅の始まりでもあります。

教会では成人祝福式礼拝が行われました。

今年、祝福を受ける成人達は、この幼稚園の卒園生として幼い日々をここで過ごした人たちです。小さな手をお母さんとしっかりつなぎながら門をくぐり、歌い、祈り、友だちと笑い合った場所に、今、立派に成長した姿で再び集ってくれました。その歩みの一つひとつが守られ、導かれてきたことを、教会と幼稚園が共に喜び、感謝する時となりました。 教会で行われる成人祝福式は、「ここまで無事に守られてきたことへの感謝」と「これからの歩みへの祈り」を神の前にささげる時でもあります。

ヘーゼルナッツの実が、長い季節を経て静かに熟すように、若者一人ひとりの人生も、神の時の中で形づくられます。誰かと比べるのではなく花の時期も、実を結ぶ時期も、それぞれに備えられています。

成人祝福式は、ゴールではなくスタートです。教会は、これから社会へと踏み出していく若者たちを、祈りと祝福をもって送り出します。

小さなヘーゼルナッツの実の中に豊かな恵みが宿っているように、若者たちの内にも、神が与えてくださった賜物と可能性が確かに宿っています。その一つひとつが、ふさわしい時に用いられ、実を結んでいきますように。

今年、20歳を迎えるすべての方の歩みの上に、主の豊かな祝福と平安がありますよう、心から祈ります。

In the kindergarten playground, the hazelnut tree has begun to bloom.

The hazelnut (European hazel) is a deciduous shrub belonging to the birch family, native to Europe and Western Asia. In early spring, before its leaves appear, it produces pale yellow male flowers that hang down in long catkins. They are not showy at all, but when you look closely, you can see how delicate they are.

One might wonder whether it is right to call it a “nut tree.” Although the flowering season is different, the flowers resemble those of the chestnut tree. Unlike chestnut blossoms, however, they do not have a strong fragrance.

Hazelnuts are widely used in sweets, bread, and chocolate, and they are known for their high nutritional value, containing healthy fats and plenty of vitamin E.

This particular hazelnut tree in the kindergarten required extraordinary care when it was planted. According to pastor Ogata’s notes in Hana Koyomi (Flower Calendar), it took as long as two winter months just to dig the planting hole. Removing stones, sifting gravel, and preparing the soil with compost was no small task. Even after planting, it takes several years before the tree can reliably bear fruit. Though buds appear, visible results do not come right away.

Meanwhile, beneath the soil, the roots steadily spread, and the branches quietly store up strength. After more than three years, the tree begins to bear fruit in autumn—hazelnuts enclosed in hard shells. Even within these small nuts, a richness patiently nurtured over time is fully contained.

Does this not remind us of the journey of young people reaching the milestone of age twenty? The word “adulthood” often carries the sense of being “complete” or “fully grown,” but in reality, it marks the beginning of a new journey—one in which roots grow deeper and each person begins to bear fruit of their own.

At the church, an Adult Blessing Service was held.

Those who received the blessing this year are graduates of this kindergarten, who spent their early childhood days here. Holding their mothers’ hands tightly, they once walked through the gate, sang songs, prayed, and laughed with friends in this very place. Now they have returned, grown into fine young adults. It became a time of shared joy and gratitude for both the church and the kindergarten, as we reflected on how each step of their journey has been protected and guided.

The Adult Blessing Service is a time to offer thanks before God for having been safely guided this far, and to pray for the path that lies ahead.

Just as hazelnuts slowly mature through many seasons, so too are the lives of these young people shaped within God’s time. There is no need for comparison—each person has their own season to bloom and their own time to bear fruit.

The Adult Blessing Service is not a goal, but a starting point. The church sends these young people out into society with prayer and blessing.

Just as great blessing is hidden within a small hazelnut, so too within each young person dwell the gifts and possibilities God has given. May each of these be used at the right time and bear good fruit.
