2026 01 18 ろう梅（ロウバイ）

 

寒さの厳しい冬のさなか、葉を落とした枝先に、蝋（ろう）細工のような花を咲かせるろう梅（ロウバイ）。

飴細工のように透き通った黄色の花が、冬の空気の中に甘い香りを運んでくれます。

ろう梅（和名：蝋梅）は、中国原産の落葉低木で、高さは2〜4メートルほどに育ちます。

学名は Chimonanthus praecox といいます。

※名前に「梅」とありますが、ウメの仲間ではありません。

半透明で蝋細工のような花びら（飴のようにも見えます）。

花は下向きに、控えめに咲き、冬の澄んだ空気の中に甘い香りを広げます。

花そのものは小さくても、その香りは遠くまで届き、

「ここに咲いているよ」と、そっと知らせてくれているようです。

ろう梅の花言葉は、

「先見」「先導」「慈しみ」「奥ゆかしさ」。

厳しい寒さの中、他の花に先がけて咲く姿から、

先を見通す力や、静かに道を示す存在が重ねられてきたとのことでした。

一月に入り、教会では新年会と称して、礼拝後に有志で集まりました。

今年はどんな年になるのか、どんな年にしたいのか。

一人一人に与えられた今年の聖句をもとに、それぞれが思い思いに語り合う時となりました。

昨年のうちに与えられた聖句、

年の初めに思いがけずいただいた聖句。

主からの語りかけは一人ひとり異なりましたが、

主とともに歩むその歩みを語り、聞き合えるこの時間は、

まるで、ろう梅の甘い香りが

「花はここに咲いているよ」と教えてくれるように、

主がここにおられることを、静かに知らせてくれる時でした。

それぞれの新しい日々が、主とともに歩む香りで包まれていますように。

In the midst of the harsh winter cold,

roubai (Japanese allspice) blooms on bare branches,

its flowers looking as if they were made of wax.

The translucent yellow blossoms, like delicate sugar candy,

carry a sweet fragrance through the winter air.

Roubai (Japanese name: 蝋梅) is a deciduous shrub native to China,

growing to a height of about two to four meters.

Its scientific name is Chimonanthus praecox.

Although it has “plum（梅）” in its name, it is not related to the plum tree.

Its semi-transparent petals resemble waxwork

—or perhaps delicate  candy art—

and the flowers bloom modestly, facing downward,

spreading their gentle fragrance through the clear winter air.

Though the flowers themselves are small,

their scent travels far,

as if quietly saying,

“I am blooming here.”

The flower meanings of roubai are

“foresight,” “guidance,” “compassion,” and “modesty.”

Because it blooms ahead of other flowers

in the depth of winter,

it has come to symbolize the ability to see ahead

and to quietly show the way.

In January, after the worship service,

members of the church gathered for a New Year’s fellowship.

We shared our thoughts about what kind of year this might be

and what kind of year we hope it will become,

reflecting on the Scripture given to each of us for the year.

Some Scriptures were given toward the end of last year,

others unexpectedly at the beginning of this one.

Though God’s words to each person were different,

this time of sharing and listening—

speaking of our walk with the Lord—

felt like the sweet fragrance of roubai,

gently telling us,

“The flowers are blooming here,”

quietly assuring us that the Lord is present among us.

May each person’s new days

be wrapped in the fragrance of walking together with the Lord.
