「復活の丘」に、根を張る「ソテツ」があります。

先に天へと召された方々を覚え、祈りとともにあるこの場所。

その近くには大きな岩があり、ソテツはいつの間にか、その岩を覆うほど大きくなりました。

教会のソテツは、長い年月、このところでじっと立ち続けています。

「ソテツ（蘇鉄）」は、ソテツ科ソテツ属の常緑の裸子植物で、日本では九州南部から沖縄にかけて自生しています。

見た目はヤシの木に似ていますが、実はまったく異なる植物で、恐竜の時代からほとんど姿を変えていないことから、「生きた化石」とも呼ばれています。

成長はとてもゆっくりですが、乾燥や暑さ、風にも強く、厳しい環境の中でも生き続ける力を持っています。

葉は放射状に広がり、厚くて硬く、先がとがっているのが特徴です。

そのため、少し怖く見えることもあり、子どもがふいに近づくと危ない場面もあります。

園や教会では、声をかけながら、そっと見守る配慮も大切にされています。

「蘇鉄」という名には、鉄のように強く、よみがえるという意味が込められていると言われています。

厳しい状況の中で葉を落としても、時が来れば、幹の中心から新しい葉を再び広げます。

強く立ち続ける、生きた化石と呼ばれるソテツ。

納骨堂のある復活の丘から、

「よみがえりがここにある。つよくあれ」

そんな声が、聞こえてくるようです。

On the Hill of Resurrection, there stands a「 cycad」, firmly rooted in the ground.

This is a place of prayer, where we remember those who have been called home to heaven.

Nearby is a large rock, and over time the cycad has grown so much that it now seems to cover it.

For many long years, the church’s cycad has stood here quietly and faithfully.

The cycad (Sotetsu) is an evergreen gymnosperm belonging to the family Cycadaceae.

In Japan, it grows naturally from southern Kyushu to Okinawa.

Although it resembles a palm tree, it is actually a completely different plant and is often called a “living fossil,” as it has changed little since the age of the dinosaurs.

Its growth is very slow, yet it is remarkably strong—resistant to drought, heat, and wind—and able to survive even in harsh conditions.

Its leaves spread out in a circular form and are thick, hard, and sharply pointed.

Because of this, the plant can appear somewhat intimidating, and there are moments when it may be dangerous if children approach it suddenly.

In the kindergarten and church grounds, we gently watch over it, offering careful guidance and reminders to keep a safe distance.

The name Sotetsu (蘇鉄) is said to mean “strong as iron（鉄）, yet able to revive（蘇）.”

Even after losing its leaves in difficult circumstances, when the time comes, new leaves emerge once again from the center of its trunk.

Standing strong through the years, this “living fossil,”

from the Hill of Resurrection, where the columbarium rests,

seems to whisper to us:

“Here is the resurrection. Be strong.”
