アベリアは、中国原産のシナツクバネウツギ（Abelia chinensis）と同属のユニフローラ（Abelia uniflora）の雑種であるとされています。樹形は、ブッシュ状に育つ種類のほか、グランドカバーとして使われる矮性品種もあります。
日本へ渡来したのは大正時代末期のこと。花期が長く、丈夫な性質を持つことから、東京オリンピック以後の緑化ブームを契機に全国へ広まり、現在でも多くの街路や公共の緑地、マンション等の生垣や植え込みに植栽されています。
「アベリア」の花言葉は「謙遜」「強運」
開花は初夏から霜が降り始まる晩秋までで、長さ１．５～２センチのラッパ型をした花が次々に咲きます。そしてその花の香りはほんのりとジャスミンのような香りがします。花色は白とピンクがあり、葉の色も豊富で、光沢のあるグリーンや、白斑や黄斑が入るものなど多様です。、季節で葉色が変化しカラーリーフとしても人気がある種類もあるそうです。花の後には紅褐色をした５個の萼片が果実のように残るが、アベリアに種子ができるのは稀であり、繁殖は挿し木や株分けで増やすことができるとのことでした。
京都復興教会のアベリアは、自転車置き場に入るところの生垣に見つけることができます。
緒形先生の「花こよみ」では「つくばねうつぎ」と題して紹介されています。ショッキングな出来事があった時、もう１か月も咲き続けているこの花に慰められたとありました。
この日曜日は「こどもの日 花の日」礼拝でした。毎年この礼拝の時には教会学校の子供たちが花を持ち寄り、午後からは日ごろお世話になっている方々にお花をプレゼントしに行きます。
今年も、地域の安全を守ってくださっている方々のもとへ訪問し、お花とともに「ありがとう」を届けました。たくさんの笑顔が咲く日となりました！

Abelia –
Abelia is believed to be a hybrid between Abelia chinensis, native to China, and Abelia uniflora, a species of the same genus. The plant has various forms—some grow in bushy shapes, while others are dwarf varieties often used as ground cover.
It was introduced to Japan in the late Taisho period. Because of its long blooming season and resilient nature, it became widely planted across the country during the post-Tokyo Olympics greening boom. Even today, abelia can be seen along city streets, in public green spaces, and in hedges or garden beds around apartment complexes.
The flower language (hanakotoba) of abelia includes "humility" and "good fortune."
Its flowers bloom continuously from early summer until late autumn when frost begins to fall. Each flower, shaped like a small trumpet about 1.5 to 2 cm long, gives off a light, jasmine-like fragrance. The blossoms come in shades of white and pink, and the foliage is equally diverse—shiny green leaves, as well as variegated types with white or yellow patterns. Some varieties even change color with the seasons and are prized as ornamental foliage.
After the flowers fall, five reddish-brown sepals remain, resembling small fruit. However, abelia rarely produces seeds. Instead, it is propagated through cuttings or division.
At Kyoto Fukkō Church, you can find abelia growing as a hedge near the entrance to the bicycle parking area.
In Reverend Ogata’s “Flower Calendar,” abelia is introduced under the name Tsukubaneutsugi. She shares a personal story of being comforted by the sight of this flower, which had continued to bloom for over a month during a particularly shocking and difficult time in her life.
This past Sunday, we celebrated our “Children’s Day and Flower Sunday” service. Every year on this special day, the children from Sunday School bring flowers to the service. In the afternoon, they go out into the community to deliver these flowers to people who help us in our daily lives.
This year, once again, the children visited those who work hard to keep our community safe, offering them flowers as a token of our gratitude. It was a day filled with smiles!
Flowers are a way to express gratitude,
to comfort those who see them,
a gentle gift from God.
And yes, the abelia will keep blooming on… 😊
