2025 06 15 梔子（クチナシ）

 

春のジンチョウゲ、初夏から夏にかけてのクチナシ、秋のキンモクセイの3つは、「三大香木」と呼ばれるほど、クチナシは良い香りがしています◎

アカネ科の多年生常緑樹で、白い花を咲かせた後に濃いオレンジ色の実をつけます。くちなしの果実は熟れても割れないのが特徴で、そのことから「口が開かない」という表現になり、くちなしと名付けられたといわれています。

くちなしの実を料理に使うと食材がきれいな黄色に染まります。香りや味がほとんどないため、風味を損ねることがなく色付けができるので、お正月の栗きんとんの色付けやスイートポテトやたくあん漬けなど、くちなしの実はさまざまな料理に使われています。うちではオレンジ色のきれいな実の時に摘み冷凍保存しています。

クチナシの開花時期は、季節によりますが、主にいまごろ初夏から夏にかけてが一番見頃です。その期間はだいたい6月から7月頃で、この時期になると、小さな白い花がたくさん咲き、甘い香りがいっぱいに広がります！

白い花なのにその実からは鮮やかな黄色が提供される。なんとも不思議ですね

クチナシの花言葉は、「喜びを運ぶ」「優雅」「とても幸せ」だそうです。

教会の敷地内に点在してあるクチナシは、乙枝先生が山科で暮らすようになって、知らない人の家に声をかけ、いただいた一枝を挿し木して随分たくさん増やしあちこちに植えたり差し上げたりしたものだそうです。

梅雨の時期に、じめじめした嫌な感じを吹き飛ばしてくれるほどの香を放ってくれてます！

乙枝先生はこのクチナシから

”語らず言わずその声も聞こえざるに…”という詩編の言葉があるが、くちなしの高い、そして良い香りは、福音の宣伝に沿わねばならぬ無言の証である…

と語っておられました。

私は

”16 北風よ、目覚めよ。南風よ、吹け。わたしの園を吹き抜けて

香りを振りまいておくれ。恋しい人がこの園をわがものとして

このみごとな実を食べてくださるように。”

という雅歌の聖句が浮かびましたが、

Daphne in spring, gardenia from early to midsummer, and fragrant olive in autumn—these three are known as the "Three Great Fragrant Trees" in Japan, and gardenia is celebrated for its exquisite scent ◎

A perennial evergreen tree in the Rubiaceae family, the gardenia bears pure white flowers that later produce deep orange-colored fruits. Interestingly, these fruits do not split open even when ripe. Because of this, the name "kuchinashi" (literally “no mouth”) is believed to have originated from the idea of "not opening one’s mouth."

When used in cooking, gardenia fruit imparts a beautiful yellow color to food. Since it has almost no flavor or scent, it adds color without altering the taste. It's used in various dishes like New Year’s sweet chestnut paste (kuri kinton), sweet potatoes, and pickled daikon (takuan). In our home, we pick the bright orange fruits and store them frozen.

Depending on the season, gardenias typically bloom from early to midsummer, with the best time being around June to July. During this period, many small white flowers bloom, and their sweet fragrance fills the air.

It’s truly mysterious how such a vivid yellow color comes from the fruit of a white-flowered plant.

The flower language of the gardenia includes meanings like "bringing joy," "elegance," and "great happiness."

The gardenias scattered throughout the church grounds were originally propagated by Pastor Otoe . After moving to Yamashina, she would ask people for a branch from their gardens and propagate them through cuttings. Over time, she grew many, planting them in various places and giving them to others.

During the rainy season, their fragrance seems to blow away the damp and unpleasant atmosphere!

 Pastor Otoe　once said of the gardenia:

“There is a verse in the Psalms that says,
‘Without speech or language, without a sound to be heard...’
Even so, the gardenia’s rich and beautiful fragrance is a silent testimony that aligns with the proclamation of the Gospel.”

In response, I was reminded of this verse from the Song of Songs:

“Awake, north wind, and come, south wind!
Blow upon my garden that its fragrance may spread abroad.
Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.”
(Song of Songs 4:16)
