Oakleaf Hydrangea (Scientific name: Hydrangea quercifolia) is a deciduous shrub in the Hydrangea genus of the Hydrangeaceae (Saxifragaceae) family. It is native to the southeastern United States.
The name comes from the shape of its leaves, which resemble those of the oak tree (kashiwa in Japanese). The flowers have a unique pyramidal shape and bloom pure white from May to July. There are both single and double-flowered varieties. Another plant with similar pyramidal flowers is the “Minazuki” hydrangea, but you can distinguish them by the shape of their leaves.
The flower color changes over time—from lime green at the beginning, to white, then back to lime green, followed by pink, and finally the warm hues of autumn. In the fall, the foliage turns a beautiful coppery red, which is also a delight to see.
Oakleaf hydrangea is loved for its beautiful blooms and autumn foliage. It's also hardy and can thrive even in shady spots, making it a popular choice for gardens.
At our church, there's a slightly shaded path from the hall to the parking lot where these hydrangeas are thriving beautifully. The area where they bloom seems to be expanding each year, and they never fail to bring us joy with their stunning presence!
The flower language (symbolism) of the oakleaf hydrangea includes: "compassion," "pure heart," "beauty," "charming person," and "energetic woman."
Now that June has arrived, preparations are underway at our church for a very special occasion—next year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of our church! We’re excitedly brainstorming ideas and planning events and creative projects to celebrate this important The 80th Foundation Day together. The excitement is truly contagious! 💓
Speaking of celebrations, we also recently had a birthday party!
The Mariyakai (Mary’s Circle) members once again made a handmade cake this year, and it turned out to be a joyful and heartwarming day. 🍰☕
