教会の入り口の門のすぐそば、

風に揺れて咲くその姿は、まるでくすくす笑っているように見えます。

白丁花（はくちょうげ）

学名は Serissa japonica（または Serissa foetida）。

アカネ科ハクチョウゲ属の常緑低木で、日本や中国、東南アジアを原産とします。

初夏から夏にかけて咲く花木で、枝は細かくよく分かれ、刈り込みにも強いため、生け垣としてよく植えられています。

花はひとつひとつがとても小さく、先がやさしく開いたラッパのような形をしています。

この「丁」は花のかたちを表す言葉で、白鳥の「鳥」とは関係がありません。

「白い丁字形の花が咲く」ことがその名の由来ですが、同じアカネ科で紫色の花を咲かせる落葉低木、紫丁花（シチョウゲ／イワハギ）に対して名づけられたともいわれています。

英名は June Snow（ジューン・スノー）。

緑の葉のあいだからこぼれるように咲く白い花は、たしかに六月に舞う雪のようです。

五月には夏日を超えるような日もあり、季節も夏へと傾いていきます。

そんな暑さの気配のなかでも、白丁花はどこ吹く風といった様子で、

「暑さなんて気にならないの」

と、くすくす笑っているようです。

「ケセラセラ」

――成り行きを天に任せて、「なるようになる」と気楽に構える。

そんな言葉が似合う、教会の花です。

Just beside the church gate,

the blossoms sway in the breeze as if quietly giggling to themselves.

 Hakuchōge(Snowrose)

Its scientific name is Serissa japonica (also known as Serissa foetida).

An evergreen shrub of the coffee family (Rubiaceae), it is native to Japan, China, and Southeast Asia.

Blooming from early summer into midsummer, its branches divide finely and respond well to trimming, which is why it is often planted as a hedge.

Each flower is very small, shaped like a delicate little trumpet with softly opened tips.

The character chō (丁) in its Japanese name refers to this flower shape and has no connection to the “bird” in “white bird” (hakuchō).

The name is said to mean “a white flower shaped like the character 丁,” though it may also have been given in contrast to the purple-flowering deciduous shrub Shichōge (Purple Daphne), a plant of the same family.

Its English name is June Snow.

The tiny white blossoms spilling through the green leaves truly do look like snow drifting down in June.

In May, some days already grow hot enough to feel like summer, and the season gradually leans toward warmer days ahead.

Yet even in the hint of approaching heat, the snowrose seems completely unbothered, as if saying,

“Oh, the heat doesn’t trouble me at all.”

And there it is again, quietly giggling.

“Que sera, sera”

— leaving things to heaven and taking life lightly, trusting that whatever will be, will be.

It is a phrase that seems to suit this flower of our church.
