フランネル草

教会や幼稚園の園庭で、やわらかそうな銀白色の葉を広げる草を目にしたことはありますか？いまの時期は、その葉からすっと伸びた茎の先に濃いピンク色の花が次々と咲き始めています

フランネル草（和名は「酔仙翁（スイセンノウ）」）

学名は Lychnis coronaria。

ナデシコ科センノウ属の多年草で、原産地は南ヨーロッパから西アジアにかけての地域です。

花は5枚の花びらをもち、初夏から夏にかけて次々と開花します。

鮮やかな花色も美しいですが、それ以上に印象的なのは銀色を帯びたビロードのような手触りの葉！

強い日差しや乾燥から身を守るために生えた細かな毛らしいのですが、それが光を反射し、やさしく銀色に輝いているようにも見えますね。

それがフランネル生地のようにやわらかな質感をもつことから「フランネル草」という名前でよばれるようになりました。

フランネル草 (Lychnis coronaria) の属名 Lychnis（リクニス） は、ギリシャ語の 「lychnos（λύχνος）」からきていて、「灯火」「ともしび」「ランプ」を意味します。

lychnos (λυχνος)=lamp, light

この名が付けられた理由には諸説ありますが、かつてこの仲間の植物の葉がランプの芯として用いられたことや、鮮やかな花が灯火のように目立つことに由来すると考えられています。

この lychnos（灯火） は新約聖書のギリシャ語本文にもたびたび使われています。

たとえば、

「あなたがたは世の光である。」

「また、ともしびをともして枡の下に置く者はない。」

（マタイ5:14-15）

の「ともしび」が「 lychnos」 。

また、

「あなたのみことばは、私の足のともしび、私の道の光です。」詩編119:105

は旧約聖書ですが、この箇所をギリシャ語訳（七十人訳聖書）で読むと、やはり「 lychnos」 が用いられているのですって。

フランネル草の花言葉は、「誠実」、「機知」、「自然を好む」

またその属名を知ると、その鮮やかな花が単に美しいだけでなく、「灯火」という意味を秘めていることを知ります。

この初夏から次々を開花していく様子は、何気ない毎日の中でもペンテコステから始まる聖霊のともしびが次々と途切れなく光り継いでいくようにみえませんか？

日々の小さな積み重ねの中に美しい“ともしび lychnos”があり、主にある誠実な歩みとなりますように。

Flannel Flower

Have you noticed a plant with soft-looking silvery-white leaves growing around the church grounds or kindergarten garden?

At this time of year,　deep pink flowers are beginning to bloom one after another on slender stems rising from those leaves.

Flannel Flower　(known in Japanese as *Suizennō*, 酔仙翁)

Its scientific name is *Lychnis coronaria*.

It is a perennial belonging to the carnation family (*Caryophyllaceae*), native to southern Europe and western Asia.

Each flower has five petals and continues blooming from early summer into midsummer.

The vivid flower color is beautiful, but even more striking are its silvery, velvety leaves.The fine hairs covering the leaves help protect the plant from strong sunlight and drought. These tiny hairs also reflect the light, giving the foliage a gentle silver glow.

Because the leaves feel much like flannel fabric, the plant came to be known as the "Flannel Flower."

The genus name 『Lychnis』 comes from the Greek word 『lychnos』 (λύχνος), meaning "lamp," "light," or "torch."

There are several theories about the origin of this name. Some believe that the leaves of related species were once used as lamp wicks, while others suggest that the bright flowers themselves resembled little lamps shining in the landscape.

Interestingly, 「lychnos」appears many times in the Greek text of the New Testament.

For example, in Matthew 5:14–15:

 "You are the light of the world."

"Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket."

The word translated as "lamp"　is 『lychnos』.

The same word also appears in the Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint) 

 "Your word is a lamp to my feet

　 and a light to my path." Psalm 119:105:

The flower meanings associated with Flannel Flower are "sincerity," "wit," and "love of nature."

Knowing the meaning behind its genus name, we begin to see that these brilliant blossoms are not merely beautiful flowers; they also carry within their name the image of a 『lighted lamp』.

As the flowers continue to open throughout the early summer season, they may remind us of the flame of the Holy Spirit, poured out at Pentecost, passing from one light to another without ever being extinguished.

May the small and faithful acts of each day become beautiful 『lychnoi—little lamps—』shining with the light of Christ, and may they guide us into a sincere walk with the Lord.
