学名は Corylopsis spicata。
マンサク科トサミズキ属の落葉低木で、早春に花を咲かせる木のひとつです。
名前にある「土佐」は、かつての土佐国、現在の高知県に由来し、日本固有の植物として知られています。
まだ冷たい空気の中、葉に先がけて現れるのは、細く連なるように咲く花の房。
小さな花がいくつも集まり、やさしい黄色の連なりとなって、枝先に下がります。
近づいてみると、一つの花はとても小さく、繊細なつくりをしています。
淡い黄色の花弁と、中心からのぞく雄しべ。
その姿は、華やかに咲き誇るというよりも、ちらちらと光る小さな灯のようです
蝋梅や万作、山茱萸の花も以前ご紹介しましたが、
この時期は、小さな黄色の花の紹介が続いています。
いずれも、葉が出るより先に花を咲かせる木々。
同じ黄色でも、姿も咲き方もそれぞれに異なり、
ひとつひとつに、異なる表情があります。
そして、今回のトサミズキもまた、
その流れの中にある花のひとつなのですね。
The scientific name is *Corylopsis spicata*.
It is a deciduous shrub in the witch hazel family (Hamamelidaceae), known for blooming in early spring.
The name “Tosa” comes from the former Tosa Province, now Kochi Prefecture, and the plant is native to Japan.
In the lingering chill of the season, before the leaves begin to emerge,
slender chains of blossoms appear along the branches.
Clusters of small flowers gather together, forming gentle trails of pale yellow that hang softly from the branch tips.
Looking closely, each flower is quite small and delicately formed.
Soft yellow petals surround fine stamens that quietly emerge from the center.
Rather than blooming with showy brilliance,
they resemble tiny flickers of light, softly shimmering in the air.
We have previously introduced wintersweet, Japanese witch hazel, and Japanese cornel,
and at this time of year, a series of small yellow blossoms continues to appear.
All of these trees bloom before their leaves unfold.
Though they share the same yellow hue,
each has its own form and way of blooming,
offering a different expression of the season.
And this Tosa-mizuki, too,
is one of the flowers that belongs to this gentle progression of early spring.
Its language of flowers includes “purity,” “grace,” and “message.”
These modest yet radiant blossoms seem to softly whisper,
“Spring has come.”
From the garden to the two-year-old class,
they seem to sparkle ✨as if saying,
“You’ll soon be moving up to the next class.”
