黄花コスモス

キバナコスモスはコスモス属の一種です。学名のスルフレウスは黄色の意味があり、濃い黄色の花を咲かせます。コスモスより葉幅が広く、耐暑性があり、メキシコの自生地でもコスモスより標高の低いところに住み分けて分布しています。原種は草丈1m以上になり、やや短日性ですが、園芸品種は草丈が低く、日長に関係なく開花します。

日本では広く園芸品種のひとつとして栽培されているが、一部は逸出して野生化しているようです。

花言葉は「野性的な美しさ」。

繊細な印象のコスモスに比べて、野生的な魅力があるキバナコスモス。

実際にコスモスよりも夏場の暑さに強く、繁殖力が旺盛です。

花言葉の「野性的な美しさ」もその野草的な雰囲気に由来するといわれます。

その一方育てたい植物と一緒に植えてしまうと、根を広げて他の植物の領域に侵入し、栄養や水分を奪ってしまうことがあります。 その結果、コスモスの周囲に植えられた他の植物が十分な栄養を得られず、乾燥して枯れてしまうことがあるそうです。

なるほどガーデニングするときは気を付けないといけない植物ですね！

教会では駐車場の一部でほかの種類のコスモスとともに咲いていますが、この暑さの中、黄花コスモスが一番早くに開花しています。

　あと似た花でオオキンケイギクという黄色い花があるそうです。こちらは、とても繁殖力が強く、在来野草を脅かし、生態系に悪影響をおよぼすことが分かったため、特定外来生物に指定されている植物です。間違えて植えないようにしないとだめで、見かけたら根元から刈り取らないといけないようです。

Yellow Cosmos

Cosmos sulphureus, commonly known as yellow cosmos, is a species of the cosmos genus. The species name sulphureus means "yellow" in Latin, and as the name suggests, it produces deep yellow flowers. Compared to the common cosmos, its leaves are broader, and it has greater heat tolerance. In its native habitat of Mexico, it tends to grow at lower altitudes than the common cosmos, showing a distribution based on elevation.

The wild species can grow over one meter tall and is somewhat short-day dependent, meaning it flowers more easily when days are shorter. However, cultivated garden varieties are shorter in height and bloom regardless of day length.

In Japan, yellow cosmos is widely grown as one of the popular ornamental varieties. However, some plants have escaped cultivation and appear to have become naturalized in the wild.

The flower's symbolic meaning is "wild beauty."

Compared to the delicate image of the common cosmos, yellow cosmos has a more wild and untamed charm. In fact, it is more tolerant of summer heat than the common cosmos and reproduces vigorously. The flower language, “wild beauty,” is said to reflect this wildflower-like presence.

On the other hand, if planted together with other plants you wish to grow, yellow cosmos may spread its roots into the territory of neighboring plants, taking away nutrients and moisture. As a result, other plants around it may not receive enough nourishment and could dry out and wither.

That’s why it’s a plant to be careful with when doing any gardening!

At the church, yellow cosmos is blooming in part of the parking area alongside other types of cosmos, but despite the heat, yellow cosmos is the first to flower.

There’s also a similar-looking yellow flower called Coreopsis lanceolata. This plant has extremely strong reproductive power and has been found to threaten native wild plants, negatively affecting the local ecosystem. Because of this, it has been designated as a Specified Invasive Alien Species in Japan. You must be careful not to plant it by mistake. If you find it, you are required to cut it down from the base.
